2017/18 - Another Exciting and Varied Season ahead for YPC.

The YPC’s new season has a distinct ‘Home and Away’ element.

At ‘home’, in a four concert season which will include works never before performed by the YPC. These concerts feature a varied and interesting choral programme, with nationally renowned soloists and the highest quality orchestral and instrumental support.

All the concerts will be performed in Wakefield Cathedral, all having a 7.00 pm. start.

The first concert of the season is on Saturday 11th November, Armistice night. To particularly mark this nationally important day, the YPC has chosen two pieces which, in different ways, commemorate the sacrifice and loss war brings. The drama and directness of Sir Karl Jenkins’ ‘The Armed Man’ will contrast with the calmer and flowing approach of Maurice Durufle in his ‘Requiem’

The Armed Man is possibly Sir Karl’s most popular work. Commissioned in 2000 by The Royal Armouries, it deals with both the horrors of war and our human longing for lasting peace. The YPC will not only be joined by the excellent vocal skills of 2 young soloists, Christina Jones and Miles Taylor but also the instrumental solo skills of members of the Amici Ensemble with the dramatic percussion playing of the Mixed Metals Percussion Ensemble.

Saturday 16th December brings the YPC Annual Christmas Concert. This will feature the YPC with Brass Quintet and organ in carols and Christmas Music old and new. Special guests for the evening will be the QEGS Junior Boys Choir. There will be plenty of good cheer and audience participation, so book early and come and start your Christmas with the YPC.

The Spring 2018 Concert, on Saturday 24 March 2018, brings the power and drama of the operatic world to the choral stage. Despite being confronted with ‘’sacred texts’ and formats, neither Puccini nor Rossini attempted to mask their irrepressible styles, each giving us a choral ‘tour de force’.

For the final ‘home’ concert of the season, on Saturday 23rd June 2018, the YPC presents works of a non sacred nature. Extracts from Carmina Burana seem to be heard everywhere these days, so come and experience the complete work, and the unusual themes within.

Bob Chilcott has added several interesting works to the contemporary choral repertoire and ‘Songs and Cries’ is up there with his best. If you like ‘Oranges and Lemons’ this is for you!

The ‘Away’ element of the season comes when over the May Bank Holiday (25-28 May 2018) the YPC will be on a short recital tour in Scotland with afternoon recitals in St Giles’ Cathedral, Edinburgh (Saturday), Holy Trinity Church, St. Andrews (Sunday) and calling off on the way home at St Margaret’s, Hawes, North Yorkshire, for a recital on Bank Holiday, Monday afternoon.

Maybe Scotland is not on your planned visitor list but maybe a Bank Holiday Monday in the Yorkshire Dales might see you joining us there. We hope so.
