ELIJAH is an epic worth experiencing - book now for 8 April Performance

The Yorkshire Philharmonic Choir (YPC) will continue it’s successful ‘Homecoming Season’ on 8th April 2017 with one of the towering works in the choral repertoire when they perform Mendelssohn’s epic ‘Elijah’. Last year's renovation work to Wakefield Cathedral, (the YPC’s ‘home base’) saw the choir 'on the road', performing in Leeds Town Hall, The Venue (Leeds), Dewsbury Town Hall, Unity Works in addition to a well received short tour in Northern Ireland. Choir Chairman, Derek Howell comments ‘as much as we enjoy travelling, especially around Yorkshire, it’s certainly good to be ‘home’ again.

‘Elijah’ will be the third concert of the YPC’s 2016/17 on Saturday 8th April 2017, 7.00pm in Wakefield Cathedral. The work is very much a ‘concert opera’ and, as it’s name suggests comprises the more interesting aspects of the life of biblical prophet of that name.

To match its operatic style the YPC has turned to the world of opera for its soloists on that evening and all 4 come with international acclaim. Devotees of Opera North will readily recognise Gaynor Keeble (Mezzo Soprano) and Warren Gillespie (Tenor) who have performed many roles at the Leeds based company, while Ilkley born Soprano, Una Barry has featured with Scottish and Kent opera and Canadian Bass, Andrew Mahon, with Toronto Opera as well as Companies in Wales.

They and the YPC will be supported by the Amici Ensemble, on that night in full symphony orchestra format. The Wakefield Girls High School Junior under 11 choir will also feature within the work.

Just an advanced note:

The Final concert of the season will take place on Saturday 24th June 2017, 7.00pm in Wakefield Cathedral, a concert supporting Wakefield Hospice. On that night the YPC will change the mood entirely, presenting two of the most beautiful works of the 20th Century, Faure's 'Requiem' and John Rutter's 'Mass of the Children’. Both works are full of melody, lyricism and luxuriously scored for singers and orchestra alike, the latter will feature the Silcoates School Junior Choir.
