15 November Concert - Poulenc, Elgar and much more!

Our next Concert, on Saturday 15 November, 7.30pm in Wakefield Cathedral is both a Dedication and a Commemoration.

The whole concert is dedicated to the choir's former chairman, Richard Haigh, who sadly died in September, and the first half of the concert will include music which had special significance to Richard. The programme will open with Copland's 'Fanfare for the Common Man' featuring the brass and percussion sections of the Amici Ensemble, followed by Parry's majestic Coronation Anthem 'I was glad'. The main work is 'Gloria' by Poulenc. A work in 6 short movements which reflects the integration of musical genres, harmonies and rhythms brought to the fore by the 20th century.

The second half of the programme is a Commemoration of the Centenary of the start of World War 1. In a new venture combining the music of the period with drama and visual images the intention is to transport the audience back exactly 100 years, to 15 November 1914 to sense something of the atmosphere in this country at that time, as the Government's initial mass recruitment drive began. Sir Edward Elgar's music features throughout, with the orchestra presenting 'Nimrod' before the choir join them for the main work 'The Spirit of England' which is a descriptive setting of three WW1 poems by Laurence Binyon.
