Wakefield Cathedral: Project 2013!
Following the awarding of a major grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund an exciting education project and much needed work on the interior of the cathedral will begin in Spring 2012:
Archaeological investigations under the floor
A new level stone floor with underfloor heating
New electrics to safeguard the historic fabric
New lighting – for worship, performance and to highlight the building’s key features.
The purpose of this work is to ensure a secure future for the cathedral and to provide a useable space for the city, the diocese and community groups. For the building to be properly updated and flexible, further work needs to take place at the same time:
Cleaning of the interior walls
New seating
A new sound system – for speech and music
The creation of a quiet space in St Mark’s chapel – where people can pray and reflect while the rest of the building is busy.
The cathedral community looks forward to a bright future in 2013 when the first phase of the project is complete.
For the duration of this work, the Yorkshire Philharmonic Choir will perform in other venues around Wakefield and Leeds. For our March and June concerts we will be in QE Hall at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield.
